At the Mendenhall Valley Public Library on Monday afternoon, three poll workers prepped for Election Day.

"We want it to feel as easy as possible for all voters," said poll worker Andy Peterson. She stood near an ICX tablet that records a vote, then prints the ballot to be counted with all the rest. It's set up in the corner of the Valley Library's large meeting room.

"It's so folks with all kinds of abilities can use it and vote," she said.

The ICX tablet has different accessibility options, such as changing the background from black to white and enlarging text for visibility preferences, and using headphones to have the options read aloud. It's been available for years, but poll workers said not everyone knows it is offered. (Jasz Garrett / Juneau Independent)

The Valley library had seen 43 in-person early voters as of about 4 p.m. Monday, with a handful more ballots being turned into the dropbox just outside.

"We appreciate all the people who voted over the last two weeks," said Tom Dienst, another poll worker at the library. "Many people used the ballot box. Many people mailed their ballots, and many people came here."

He said he anticipated a busy Election Day on Tuesday, so it was helpful some Juneau residents came in early. About 4,733 ballots had been returned in total as of Saturday, according to KTOO. Vote centers opened Sept. 21 and by-mail voting began Sept. 18.

"It's important that people vote," Dienst said.

The Mendenhall Valley Public Library is open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Election Day, and the same hours apply at City Hall downtown. Tuesday evening is the deadline for both casting a ballot by mail and voting at either vote center.

Along with the in-person vote centers, registered Juneau voters can drop their ballots at the Valley library and City Hall, as well as the Alaska Electric Light and Power office, the Douglas Public Library, and Statter Harbor boat launch.

Capital Transit is providing free rides Tuesday to all passengers so they can make their way to a vote center or ballot box.

Eight candidates are seeking three Juneau Assembly seats and three candidates are seeking two Juneau Board of Education seats. There are also three tax-related ballot propositions.

More information about all three ballot propositions, along with profiles of Assembly and school board candidates, can be found in the Juneau Independent's election guide.

The city will release preliminary results on Tuesday evening. Final results will be certified on Oct. 20.
