You've always had a seat at the table — why not pull up a chair? If you haven't tuned in to an Assembly meeting lately, now's a perfect time to take a look.

I'd like to thank Mr. Coogan and Ms. Hale for their thoughtful presentations on navigating recent budget changes. Their differing perspectives show that neighbors can care deeply about our community while seeing different ways forward — and that's a very good thing.

Public input on the Comprehensive Plan shows participants generally share similar ideas about our community's long-term goals. Where opinions diverge is in how to respond to specific challenges — like tighter budgets or natural events — which makes understanding the process all the more important.

A simple way to start is by tuning in to the Assembly meetings on Monday nights. By watching how topics are discussed and decisions are made, you can get a feel for the process, the personalities, and the priorities shaping our community. Join via Zoom, Facebook, or in person — maybe even put it on in the background while making dinner, or host an "Assembly Dinner Party" with friends.

If you're not familiar with city procedures, your first step is just to observe. Don't worry about testifying, writing letters, or submitting editorials yet. The goal is simply to understand how things work, so that when a topic close to your heart comes up, you'll know how to engage effectively.

Links to meetings are on the city's website under "Assembly" → "Minutes and Agendas."

By building familiarity now, you'll be ready to advocate with confidence for the issues that matter most to you.
