This is a developing story.
A power outage during heavy winds and rain knocked out power to much of Juneau at midday Tuesday, according to Alaska Electric Light and Power.
"We have an outage affecting a large majority of town (excluding downtown and Douglas)," the company announced in a Facebook post at 12:51 p.m. "Crews are out responding to multiple trees down. Unless you have information about the location of a tree in the line, please do not call to report the outage during large area outages like this one. Also be prepared for more outages with these weather conditions."
Updates on outages are available at the company’s website.
The outage affected machines at the early voting site in the Mendenhall Mall Annex, but the location remains open for in-person turning in of absentee ballots, according to the Alaska Division of Elections.
An earlier outage on Tuesday temporarily affected service to the Mendenhall Peninsula and Engineers Cutoff Road.

A high-wind warning is in effect until 4 p.m. Tuesday, with sustained winds of 25 to 35 miles per hour and gusts up to 60 mph, according to the National Weather Service Juneau. Heavy rain from an atmospheric river is also expected during the day, with a flood watch for Juneau, Yakutat and Gustavus in effect until 4 a.m. Wednesday.
Rain is forecast through Thursday night, with winds diminishing, according to the weather service.
