Two Coppers Casino targeted by scammers claiming it offers online gaming

Fraudulent Facebook profiles and online ads using new establishment’s logo and branding, tribal owner warns; new gambling website with casino’s name appears

Scammers are targeting the new Two Coppers Casino by claiming it offers online gaming, according to the Central Council of the Tlingit and Haida Indian Tribes of Alaska.

"We are aware of fraudulent Facebook profiles and online advertisements that are unlawfully using the Two Coppers Casino name, logo, and branding," the casino’s official Facebook page warned in a post on Wednesday. "These profiles and advertisements are NOT affiliated with or authorized by Two Coppers Casino or Tlingit & Haida."

The post also notes "Two Coppers Casino does not offer an online casino, mobile gaming app, or online gambling platform." It also urges people not to click on suspicious links, or provide personal or financial information to such sites.

The tribe asks people encountering such material to take screenshots and email them to communications@tlingitandhaida.gov.

"If possible, include where you saw it (Facebook, Instagram, another website, etc.) and the date you encountered it," the post notes.

The tribe’s post includes a screenshot of an imposter’s Facebook page that appears similar to the official page, but among other differences is an "Intro" section that states the page is registered to somebody working for "Online Casino Agent" and is based in Austin, Texas.

Another Facebook post by the tribe on July 24 shows a Facebook post by an impersonator offering a "welcome bonus" for a Two Coppers online gaming app. The imposter post also lists a web address with a similar URL to the official tribal casino site — although WhoIs data shows Tlingit and Haida appears to have taken protective action by registering the domain the same day it issued the warning about the fake site.

A Google search on Friday for "Two Coppers Casino" turned up another website that does purport to offer online gaming that was registered on June 9 — several days after the casino held a public "soft opening." The registrar is listed as Hosting Concepts B.V., a domain registration and reseller platform, with no indications of a specific individual or business operator.

The imposter site describes several online games it purports to offer, but makes no mention of a physical location or connection to a specific owner. The Juneau Independent did not attempt to click any links at the site.

Two Coppers Casino, which held its official opening on July 1, features 100 slot-like machines. The games themselves are common at tribal casinos and are available at online gaming sites — without risking any money, if one chooses a demonstration version.
