Juneau/Southeast Alaska artists are being sought to participate in an exhibit which will be opening at the Juneau Arts and Humanities Gallery in March 2026.
This exhibit invites artists to use the phrases of simple loving kindness mediation as inspiration for creating visual art. The version of the meditation being used to inform this exhibit is from Stephen Levine's book, "Healing Into Life and Death" (1984).
The author's introduction to this practice states, "As an example of the heart we all share and the healing available to each of us, we begin these (healing) practices with a meditation on loving kindness. It is a fundamental practice for opening healing to ourselves, to our loved ones, to this world of suffering and joy in which we live. It is a meditation which, if experimented with for ten or fifteen minutes a day for a few weeks, has the potential for softening out lives and sending healing even to those very far away."
This upcoming exhibit is a follow-up to one at Astoria Visual Arts Gallery in Astoria, Oregon in March 2025. For more information about the Astoria exhibit visit https://astoriavisualarts.org/gallery-2025-march The curator for the exhibit, Nancy Karacand, is a former Juneau resident who wishes to bring "Simple Loving Kindness" to Juneau. She is interested in both established and emerging artists for this exhibit. All visual arts media will be considered.
To familiarize artists and others in the community with this version of simple loving kindness meditation a series of meditation sessions in person and online are scheduled leading up to the exhibit. The first is scheduled in November. Attending mediation sessions is not a requirement for submitting work for the exhibit, as long as the work is inspired by some form of meditation practice.
Submission guidelines and further information about the exhibit can be obtained by emailing nkaracand@gmail.com.
