CBJ reminds public of costs and fines of illegal dumping

(City and Borough of Juneau press release)

This spring, the Juneau Police Department (JPD) and the City and Borough of Juneau (CBJ) Streets Division remind residents of the penalties of illegal dumping within the municipality as they respond to an increase in reports of trash dumped and vehicles abandoned on both public and private property.

Depositing garbage, refuse, rubbish and any other waste material of more than one square foot on a street, sidewalk or other public place, or private property within the municipality violates CBJ health code and is punishable by fines of up to $300 per occurrence (CBJ 36.30.030). Vehicles left unattended on public property for over 48 hours may be impounded as an “abandoned vehicle” (CBJ 72.23.010). Owners of abandoned vehicles are responsible for all impound fees ($300+) and up to a $500 fine.

JPD and CBJ Streets are providing a coordinated response to the trash and abandoned vehicles located at the end of Commercial Boulevard, and other sites as they are reported. Removal of the abandoned vehicles was originally delayed due to space constraints at the impound lot. These cleanup efforts are essential to public safety, however, entail significant staff time and operational cost.

Residents can drop off junk vehicles to Skookum Recycling and household hazardous waste to CBJ Recycleworks for free. Learn more about the junk vehicles and household hazardous waste drop off programs at juneau.org/engineering-public-works/recycleworks.

CBJ appreciates the public’s cooperation in reporting these issues. Residents can report violations at (907) 586-0600.
