David Leroy Bartlett, 78, passed away with his son and wife by his side on June 6, 2025, in Waynesville, North Carolina.
Born on Oct. 21, 1946, in Pennsylvania to Dick and Rosemarie Bartlett, David spent his early years in the Keystone State before the family relocated to Lexington, Kentucky.

In Lexington, David found his calling in law enforcement, proudly serving as a Lexington Police Officer during the 1970s. It was also in Lexington where he met his first wife, Linda Stanifer. The couple married and made the bold decision to move to Juneau, Alaska, where they built a life together and raised two children, Brent Bartlett and Lacey Derr (Bartlett). Though their marriage later ended, David and Linda remained devoted friends and co-parents throughout their lives.
David served the community of Juneau with dedication and integrity as a member of the Juneau Police Department from July 20, 1976, until his retirement on February 28, 1997. One of the highlights of his career was his work as a canine handler from 1984 to 1990, serving alongside his beloved German Shepherd partner, Asko.
During his time in Juneau, David met Lesli Ireland, and the two were married on April 6, 1989. With this union, David welcomed two stepdaughters into his life: Mandy Ireland and Angela Cunningham (Ireland), expanding the family he held so dear.
In retirement, David embraced his passion for the open road as an avid motorcycle rider. He found joy and freedom on two wheels, traveling and exploring whenever possible. After moving to Waynesville, North Carolina, David found a vibrant and welcoming community, forming close friendships with fellow motorcycle enthusiasts and spending countless hours riding and sharing stories.
David was known for his sharp wit, strong sense of duty, and the love he had for his family and community. His legacy lives on in the memories of those he served with, the stories he shared, and the family he cherished.
He is survived by his wife Lesli Bartlett; children Brent Bartlett (Mary), Lacey Derr (Justin), and stepdaughter Angela Cunningham (Troy); siblings Darrel Bartlett (Lillian), Debbie Rouch (Pat); Grandchildren Brian Bartlett, Bridget Bartlett, Lynden Richardson, Izabel Derr, Kristen Kibby, Allison Ireland-Haight, Steven Ireland-Haight, Ashley Cunningham, and Aja Cunningham; great grandchildren Michael Walker, Carter Murphy, and Tanner Clark; and many other loving family members and friends. David was preceded in death by parents Dick and Rosemarie Bartlett, stepdaughter Mandy Ireland, and co-parent Linda Bartlett.
The placement of David’s ashes will be held in Juneau, Alaska, at 2 p.m. on Aug. 15, 2026, at the Shrine of St. Therese Columbarium.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made in David’s name to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund, National Police Dog Foundation, or your local motorcycle club. You can reach Lesli Bartlett and family at 30 Club Knoll Avenue, Waynesville, NC 28786.
