Steve was born in Oceanside, California, to Wilbern Seymour and Dianne (Fischer) Seymour, both of whom preceded him in death. He grew up in Fresno, California, where he graduated from Bullard High School in 1973. He attended California State University, Sacramento. Steve worked for the California Legislature Sergeant-at-Arms and Capital Tours for several years, then was hired by Jackson Consulting. During that time, he was given the opportunity to sail boats and participate in sailboat racing. He also loved camping and backpacking with friends, especially in the Desolation Wilderness in Northern California.

Steve came to visit friends in Juneau, Alaska, in the early 1980s, but never left, and decided to make Juneau his home.

Steve worked for the Alaska Litho print shop, then for Alaska Marine Highways for two years. When the State of Alaska print shop was closed, he went to work at Alaska Postsecondary Education, then at the Alaska Department of Labor Unemployment, from which he retired in 2014.

In 1989, Steve met Lori Wright in Juneau, and they married in Kapaʻa, Hawaii, in 1991. Steve was very active in his union and served as a union representative for several years while working for the State of Alaska. Steve was also dedicated to his church, St. Brendan’s Episcopal Church in Juneau. He served on the Vestry for several years, taught Sunday School, and sang in the choir. He volunteered at the Johnson Youth Center, leading Sunday services and getting to know each of the young men in the facility. After retirement, Steve worked part-time for Princess Cruises as a tour bus driver.

Steve was a gifted artist with a unique personality. His love for his family and friends never wavered, and he never met a stranger.

Steve loved to fish and spent a lot of time doing so after he retired. He did not own a boat, and preferred fishing the rivers and streams in Juneau. Steve also loved his dogs. He spent many hours walking them and loved joring on his bike with the family’s German Shorthaired Pointer (Mac) every morning before work, regardless of the weather.

Steve is survived by his wife, Lori Wright-Seymour of Juneau, Alaska; son John Seymour of Juneau, Alaska; son and daughter-in-law Matthew and Selina Seymour of Portland, Oregon; his brother and sister-in-law Chris and Gail Seymour of Tucson, Arizona; sister and brother-in-law Kim and Scott Black of Henderson, Nevada; and cousin Patricia Wolfe of Fresno, California. He is also survived by his nieces and nephews Lara Sage of Shadow Hills, California; Jefferey Black of Springfield, Virginia;  Adam Black of Georgetown, Texas; Melissa Black of Los Angeles, California; Apex Seymour of Fresno, California; and Patrick Seymour of Fresno, California; and the countless friends and family who knew and loved Steve.

The family asks that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Alzheimer’s Association. A celebration of life will be held on Aug. 29 at 2 p.m. at St. Brendan’s Episcopal Church in Juneau, Alaska.
