Obituary: Pete Carran, longtime Juneau broadcaster

Long-time Juneau journalist and broadcaster Pete Carran passed away on Wednesday, Oct. 22, 2025. He was 77 years of age.

Here in Juneau Carran’s career included stints at KJNO, KTOO-TV and most recently KINY. Carran manned the News of the North desk for KINY for over 20 years. He also was host for Action Line, Capitol Chat and Problem Corner over his tenure at KINY.


Prior to his Juneau broadcast career, Carran worked on the air at KFQD-AM, KAKM-TV, KTNX Radio, and KTUU-TV, all in Anchorage. He also took a year and put KBBI public radio on the air in Homer. There, he served as General Manager.


Carran was the 65th member inducted into the Alaska Broadcasters Hall of Fame. He was inducted in 2019 and was also a multiple “Goldie” award winner in a variety of journalism categories. Pete also held the distinction of being the 1st Honorary Fireman for Capitol City Fire Rescue, as well as a Grand Marshall of the 4th of July parade and was very active with the Juneau Softball Association’s summer softball leagues.


Pete is survived by his wife Jan, his stepson Jesse Swanson, grandchildren Gavin Beasley and Jenevah Swanson, mother-in-law Barbara Blair, brothers Bob and wife Cindy, Art and wife Kay, and five nieces and nephews and nine great nieces and nephews.


Pete suffered from Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis.
